What educators are saying

It was a project for my 8th grade science students. Very straightforward and challenging for my kids.

Description

This FULLY EDITABLE project has become an exciting addition to my course. Students get to research a method of energy generation (wind, solar, tidal, hydro, coal, geothermal, biomass or nuclear) and then convert their research into a rhyming slam poem that they perform in front of the class (see below for student sample). As a fun little thing for my students….I made the instructions for this project in the form of a rhyming slam poem itself!….check out the preview to see it.

WHY USE THIS PROJECT?

I designed this project because I was tired of the conventional research projects (poster presentations or PowerPoint presentations) that don’t get students to think about their topic. My students have admitted that the typical research projects often involve presenting information that they don’t fully understand; they would often just cut, paste and regurgitate the information from an internet site without knowing what much of it meant. However, in this project I require students to rhyme their poem and this forces them to think about the meaning of each word. It really works! As a bonus, it prevents plagiarism as well. Feedback from my students has been overwhelmingly positive towards this project. They have fun with it and get to impress each other with the witty rhymes they come up with. As a double bonus…it’s a snap to mark!

SAMPLE OF STUDENT WORK

Here is an excerpt from one of my 9th grade science students.

“Today you’re going to learn about nuclear force
Let’s start off with uranium as it’s the main source
Uranium is a mined metal
After this you’ll learn why it’s so special
Do you know how the energy comes?
It’s formed by spitting uranium atoms
Nuclear power stations are pretty much like fossil fuel stations
Except the heat is produced inside the nuclear reactor with a chain foundation
Heat is generated by nuclear fission
This is where the neutrons go on a mission
Neutrons smash into the nucleus of the uranium atoms
This is why they split in half and the release of energy happens…”
