Students will use the scientific method to investigate if salt affects the ability of a piece of string to pick up an ice cube. They will record a hypothesis, follow procedures, observe, and summarize what happened. They will explore further with other materials. Students will be engineers creating a fishing pole. By the end of this investigation, the students will be able to describe the phenomenon of melting and freezing. It is age-appropriate with coloring, checkboxes, and age-appropriate writing.
Teachers will love its’ ease of use and simple, inexpensive supplies. They will enjoy watching the students get excited and take the lead in their learning. Teachers can use it for a whole class science or STEM Fair project.
Supplies needed:
cups, ice cubes, salt, string, water, timer, variety of strings, pie pans or plates, and basic STEM building supplies for fishing poles (Supplies can be modified. Just test first.)
The length of time for this investigation varies. If you do everything, it is a whole week of lesson plans.
This investigation is part of a series. This is the K/1st grade version. Please click each grade level version below to see more details.

Great for the classroom, science fairs, STEM Fairs, science clubs, scout groups, center time, homeschoolers, and anyone wanting to discover salt on ice.
This activity is a PDF. You can use it with Easel by TPT, but we did not create an overlay. At this age level, we feel the experiment is best done with paper and pencil. The older grade-level versions have a pre-made overlay, so we made the tool available. I use the tool to project the worksheets on the board for whole-class learning. It works great.
