Over the past 20 years I have been both a teacher and a teaching principal in small rural schools. In this time, I have taught all ages from 5 year old through to early teenages.

Humour is very much a natural part of my teaching style, so having fun is an important part of my classroom learning environment and developing of rapport with the students. I believe in taking the time to make myself available to my students before and after school and this is also relevant to parents and staff. In the playground, playing games and interacting with students in a less formal context is not only fun for us all, but also has huge benefits when it comes to effectively dealing with pastoral and/or discipline issues. The programmes in my classroom are exciting and fast paced. This in itself is motivating and I have always found that students turn up early to my classroom and are still at school well after the bell has gone in the afternoon. In rural schools many students did not want to go home on the bus and some arranged to stay late, do their homework at school and then be picked up by parents later in the day.
