I have worked in Adult Education centered within a correctional facility for well over 15 years. Throughout that time, i have really come to know and understand the students that I work so hard to teach. They are visual learners. They need to really visualize each and every skill and concept that we work at mastering. For that reason, I have incorporated real-life, relevant, interesting content whenever possible. I have impeccable skill in Microsoft Office; so it is that which I use so often to creating lessons for supplementing any curriculum materials that I have available. It is those visual students that have given me the most challenge; those are the ones I am working feverishly to push along. We cover basic academic skills, and then higher level GED content. It is here in Teachers Pay Teachers that I will share my custom curricular content. PLEASE add comments if the lessons work for you. If they don't- then perhaps my classroom is just too different than yours is. ~Namaste~
Visual. My teaching style is visual. I incorporate shorter readings, videos to add more detailed meaning and then written practice in many skills. It's a visual-world. Look around you at EVERYONE who is on their cell phone constantly. They are not all reading the NY Times on their phones, they are sending short messages, gifs, emoticons,etc... For those reasons, I incorporate as many visual images as possible. I feel a smart projector or smart board is a critical tool for any efficient educator!
I enjoy presenting at conferences. I have presented in WI at several Correctional Education Conferences. I have also presented in WI at the GED/ Literacy Conference. Most recently, this past August I presented in MN for their Literacy Conference.
