While this is only my second year being in the classroom full time I have been teaching in a variety of positions for the ten years I've been out of high school. While I was in college I assisted my high school theater teacher with plays and even directed a few of my own at an after school program. While working in corporate America (to pay for college because we know it's not cheap!) I volunteered at a variety of schools with the Junior Achievement organization.
I am a hands on conversationalist type teacher....what I mean by that is that when I teach history I don't want to teach at my students or listen to them read a book for 45 minutes. I want to talk to them about the material so that I can find out what they think about where we came from as country and where we are going based on current events. As often as I can I put primary documents in their hands and take them to see where history happened. I'm currently planning a gallery walk....wish me luck!
