I worked as a speech/language pathologist in the Salt Lake City School District from 1991-2021. I'm currently retired. The majority of this time I spent with preschool students with various disabilities, including speech-sound disorders, language delays, autism spectrum disorder, Down Syndrome, learning disabilities, and severe multiple impairments. I was a member of our district's Assistive Technology Team for 15 years. I also created and taught a weekly Articulation Class for preschool students and their parents for over 10 years. Although I did some "pull-out" therapy during my career, I have been lucky to spend most of it doing "push-in" therapy in self-contained and inclusive classrooms where I was a part of the classroom team. I thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with other educational professionals!
I enjoy working with students in small and/or large groups during "circle" time. I prefer to use hands-on materials, music and interactive white-boards to enhance learning. I believe speech and language practice should be embedded throughout the day as much as possible and when direct intervention is used, it should be fun, fun, fun!
