TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching social studies since 1994 at the middle school level - mostly at the same school. My school was awarded magnet status in 2005 as the first museums magnet middle school in the entire state of Florida and it has been an excellent opportunity for me to show my colleagues and students that the social studies do matter!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a BIG believer in Gardener and his theory on multiple intelligences. My classes are mostly project-based and I have been heavily trained in using Object-Based Learning and Visual Thinking Strategies which are essential at a museums magnet school.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been honored as my school's Teacher of the Year and I was awarded awarded the Middle School Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 2002 by my county's council for social studies education. I also received a preservation award by the Dade Heritage Trust due to my students' work highlighting local historic sites. My students also had the opportunity to tour a local city and wrote a book on its history. The city and a local preservation group were so impressed, they actually got the book published. It is now for sale at the city's museum.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended Miami-Dade College and graduated with a degree in Social Studies Education from Florida International University in Miami, Florida.
