I have spent a total of 18 years in the classroom, teaching a wide range of subjects. I've taught 4th-12th ELA AP Lit, so I have become very interested in curriculum over the years. This is my fourth year serving as an Instructional and Curriculum Specialist for 6th-12th, ELA, Math, Science, and History. My latest focus has been on our alternatively certified teachers and supporting and retaining them.
I have a Journalism degree, in addition to my Education degree, so my lessons are heavy in "writer-based" instruction. When I was in the classroom, my students were placed in 6 groups of 6 and they participated in a wide variety of group lessons. My belief is that the teacher facilitates the learning, but the students learn to critically think and engage in activities in which they interact and work with each other. My belief as an Instructional and Curriculum Specialist is that new teachers need more support than ever. I love helping them discover new ideas and curriculum to utilize in their classrooms.
