Middle School/Upper Elementary Scientific Method and STEM Fair Unit

Created by
Casey Sylvain
This unit was designed as a way to incorporate STEM into a more traditional Science Fair model with connections to STEM careers. Students are encouraged to choose a topic that they are deeply interested in and they learn how to connect scientific thinking to concepts outside of science class. They are also introduced to future STEM careers and community resources. The unit is directly aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core. In order to help students achieve t

Saving Fred: Teaching the Scientific Method and Teambuilding

Learning Goals: Students will learn the scientific method, define a problem using appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types, such as systematic observations or experiments, identify variables, collect and organize data, interpret data in charts, tables, and graphs, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.Students have to work together to SAVE FRED. However, they cannot use their bare ha

This is a collection of content applications that address the most common science areas found in middle and high school settings. Each challenge is introduced with a context statement and a brief scenario that helps to set the stage for introducing the dilemma. The challenge invites the students to solve the problem while adhering to specific limitations and rules. While possible procedures are provided for all the design briefs, they should never be considered the only procedures. The rationale

Internet Dating Thief

This is a forensic science lab focusing on the concept of using deductive reasoning to solve a crime. Students will use critical thinking skills sort related evidence from unrelated evidence and determine who did it. Students can be grouped in teams or individually. Teacher answer sheets are included. No additional supplies needed.

Liars Beware! Your Body Doesn't Lie. A lab on lying and polygraphs.

This is a forensic science lab on polygraph analysis. An overview of polygraphs and the body language of lying is included as well as a crime scenario. Students are asked to interpret the results of a polygraph analysis to determine if the suspect is guilty of the crime. Questions for review are included.

Projectile motion: Shoot for your grade!

Created by
Faunne Brown
The ultimate goal of this lab is to measure the estimated range of a horizontally launched projectile to hit a target, where each target "band" may be associated with a grade boundary. Students will construct a ramp, using given materials, to theoretically estimate the range (horizontal displacement) for a marble released from the top of the ramp placed on a flat surface or lab table. Upon leaving the foot of the ramp, the marble will drop in free-fall, as a horizontally launched projectile, and

STEM Electromagnet Challenge

The Electromagnet Challenge is a great way to give students practice in the make-test-improve process. They learn from their failures and keep making adjustments until they have a successful product. Successful teams communicate, collaborate, and come up with a researched plan before diving into construction. They are also flexible and willing to give up on their original and go a completely new direction if they find out their design doesn’t work. This project works well in STEM classrooms and

Soaking Up Sponges Lab Investigation- Measuring and Calculating Mass

Students will estimate, measure, and calculate in this lab. All you need is some sponges, water, and a triple beam balance or scale. Students love this lab and it's easy to do and prep!

Minimal Impact - Motor Vehicle Safety Challenge Lab

This lab allows students to use what they know about change in momentum and impulse to construct a safety device for a small vehicle. This lab requires access to force sensors, motion sensors, some small vehicle (Hotwheels or Matchbox cars will work but preferably something that winds up), cotton balls, straws, rubber bands, masking tape, and a computer/handheld data collection device (such as CPO or Vernier). Students should be put into groups of 3 to 4 and given some instruction before doing t

Earthquake Structure STEM Project

Created by

STEM Project where students research real building around the world that are built to withstand an Earthquake, then they build a structure that has to be taller than 36 cm, two stories, and they can only use cardboard, straws, pins, string, and paper clips. They have to purchase those materials and keep a budget sheet. What I love about it is that every structure looks different in the end, there is no glue or tape used, and they fail/re-build.

Fingerprinting lab

This is a lab on fingerprinting analysis. Students will learn the different types of fingerprints and will reinforce this concept with a short online "whodunit" challenge comparing fingerprinting types. Students will then fingerprint themselves and analyze their unique fingerprinting types. Lastly, students will obtain a suspect fingerprint and compare it to the rest of the class to solve the case of the "whoopee cushion prank."

This phenology activity can be done at home, observing any tree or plant! Students will observe the trees that we regularly visit with our Nature’s Notebook App. The goal of the lesson is to slow down student observations and notice trees’ intricate leaf structures. Students will measure leaf dimensions and sketch them. Designers sketch often, and quickly; this activity is also designed to give students practice in sketching but with dimensions and realism, using leaf structures. Suggested: acce

Student Developed Group Work Checklist

In this quick activity students will brainstorm what makes a group successful and unsuccessful. These brainstormed lists are used to create a checklist of things their group must do to work successfully. The lesson ends with each student signing a pledge to follow the checklist. Students are empowered to take control of their own and their group's success with activities that ask them to decide what the steps to success are. Students of all ages know what what successful group works looks and

Students must develop their own lab to prove plants break down food to release energy in the dark. Students are given flasks, plants, BTB, straws, stoppers, etc. and they must design their own test (with a control) to prove plants go through cellular respiration in the dark by proving plants produce carbon dioxide in the dark. Can be used with the Photosynthesis Design your Own Lab by splitting the class in two and having 1/2 do cellular respiration and 1/2 do photosynthesis. Students must al

Where Does Water Come From?

The water cycle is the way that water moves all around the planet. It never stops and doesn't really have a beginning or an end. It's a cycle! For example, let's take a look at ocean water. Some water on the surface of the ocean evaporates due to heat from the sun. When this happens the liquid water turns into vapor water (a gas) and goes up into the atmosphere. This water vapor collects with other water vapor molecules which then condense and turn into clouds. Clouds move about the Earth with t
