Checklist of Skills and Strategies by Guided Reading levels (A-J).

About these pages… I have compiled the skills that students need at each reading level, up to reading level J. These skills are in chart form for easy lesson planning, differentiation, and data collection. I used a variety of materials to gather this information. The following is where I got the majority of my information: Jan Richardson’s book The Next Step in Guided Reading, Continuum of Questions by SW School District of Pennsylvania, and Smekens Teacher Prompt Cards For Use During Small-Gro

Describe apples using the five senses! Fill in adjectives for the properties of apples with this graphic organizer web. This can be a whole class activity for younger grades, or done individually or in partners. When I did this activity in a first grade classroom, we started with "apples look like" and I walked around with an apple for all to see. Next for "apples feel like" we passed it around so everyone got to touch the apple. I then cut up the apple into pieces and gave each student a piece t

This is my Mat Women version of Mat Man. I use this to teach the students how to draw a girl and add all the body parts along with details. I print this 2 sided with a Mat Man version on the back. The students follow along with me as I sing the Mat Man song while adding the body parts on the left one. I change the words to Mat Women and use she instead of He. We talk about how we use he for a boy and she /her for a girl. The students color her triangle dress, add hair, ear rings, crown, and othe

Trying to come up with one recording sheet that has EVERYTHING you need is very difficult. This one has been very helpful for me so far. I have plenty of space to take notes and plan, and also to the right can just circle skills that I am seeing or that I want to work on. Since firsties normally have the same book for multiple days...I use the same form everyday but just use different colored ink each day. I hope this recording sheet is as helpful to you as it has been for me! :)

Moving Forward: Pathway to Mastery Writing Process

Writing is one of those curricular areas that most teachers shake their heads and admit they wish they could do a better job with teaching writing. The problem is that writing is personal, we encourage students to find their voice and every voice is different which means that how we approach writing will be different for every student. It took me a while to get students to write. I have tried many programs and all of them have had some success, but did not build the type of writers I was looking

This is a graphic organizer I use with my second grade students to practice paragraph writing. I do a small 10/15 min task each day with my students as that is normally all the writing time a second grader will willingly participate in doing! This is something you can do whole class and then slowly give students independence in completing.
