I use this handbook to start my year off. Through this handbook, I explain expectations for written work, spellings, book reports, and headings. The handbook goes over general topics of the year. During Back to School night, I hand the same handbook out to parents so both the child and the parent are on the "same page". You'll have to adjust the handbook according to your schedule and school but it's a good place to start.
