ICOSAHEDRON: The Element Project High School Chemistry

Created by
The Lesson Pony
The project serves as the first introduction to many of the properties of chemical elements. This is my most favorite projects I have done to date. I modified the project from AACT. It is an icosahedron ball. 4 triangles per unit @ 4 units of what they thought was important from each unit, 1 triangle for name, 1 triangle of something they wish I had done and 2 things they enjoyed. This was for High School Chemistry They also included an in-depth report of their triangles For a research project a

This is a great game to review atomic structure and how to use the periodic table to find the subatomic particles. How it works: • The game includes 18 Bohr Models of atoms of different elements. I laminate the models so that I can reuse them from year to year. • I place the 18 laminated atomic models around the room creating 18 stations. Students work in groups of 2 and rotate through the 18 stations working as a team. • Students collect the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons for

The Ideal Gas Law Task Card

Task cards are highly motivating and effective teaching tool that can be used in science classes. This one is particularly important because the ideal gas law is the standard gas law you will face when completing college level chemistry courses, just like each of the 3 stem gas laws has led to the creation of a combined gas law, scientists furthered their understanding of gases in order to create an applicable gas law that can be used to determine measurable amounts of substances to use in order

Stoichiometry Task Cards

Students will be given 2 different balanced equations and will use those equations to solve 8 different stoichiometry problems. This activity has 2 different levels. In level 1, students will arrange the provided cards to show the appropriate work for the problems provided. The cards for this level will have the numerator and denominator together for each step of the work. For level 2, students will arrange the provided cards to answer the associated problems. However, each card will now be sepa

connect 4 atomic structure review

This interactive connect 4 game is a review of determining protons neutrons and electrons for ions, isotopes and atoms. The students are given color coded index cards (printable word doc) and were asked to solve the questions in rainbow order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, hot pink, white). The students answered the questions on white boards and shouted the color (ie: red!) so that I knew which card they were up to. I had anywere from 4 groups of 4 to 6 groups of 4 depending on th

Group activity where students discover the definitions for Pure Substance and Mixture. In groups, students first determine the characteristics of "yes" examples and "no" examples, they then decide whether the testers match the "yes" examples (Pure Substance), or the "no" examples (Mixture). Follow up by introducing the terms Pure Substance and Mixture and generating a class definition.

Mixed Naming Puzzle

Students will be sorting the 12 pieces of the puzzle to form a rectangle. Each side of the puzzle (except for the border pieces) have either a chemical formula or name written on it. The students will need to correctly match the formulas with its name to form the rectangle. The compounds included in this activity are either ionic or covalent, and some examples include transition metals or polyatomic ions. Students can complete the puzzle either on their own or with a partner.
