Song Lyrics | Poetry and Songs | Figurative Language Paired Text
Have any teens who say they hate poetry activities? They love music - and this two-day lesson is a great way to bridge that love into an engaged interest in poetry. Both immersed in symbolism and transcendentalism - Walt Whitman's "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" is compared and contrasted with "The Scientist" by Coldplay for middle (I suggest grade 8) and any year of high school. Music by Coldplay will engage and motivate students and it connects so well to this amazing Walt Whitman poem.

My students examine these lyrics as Joyce Carol Oates dedicates her short story "Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?" to Bob Dylan. Song of the Week Standards Practice
I have complied four songs from various genres and time periods for students to practice standard based skills with. The focus standards of this activity are: theme, word choice, author's purpose, and parallelism. Students are also given a task where they can connect the song to their personal experiences or the world around them. I am teaching this during a rhetoric unit, but it would also be great for a poetry unit.
