Penny Boat Lab: Density, Buoyancy and Archimedes
This is a one period activity/lab to teach students about the concept of density and Archimedes Principle, why things float. Students each get a piece of aluminum foil and design and make a boat. They then must calculate how many pennies it will carry before sinking, and then test it. This is an excellent one day STEM project that combines science, math, design and construction. Students will use the formula Density=Mass divided by Volume.

Microscope Lab #4 Pond Water
This is my favorite microscope lab because the students really get to see organisms swimming around in the water. I ask the students to bring in water samples from water sources around their neighborhood. Make sure to tell them that you don't want a water sample from the gutter. I have a digital microscope that I use to project the images on my overhead screen. There is nothing better than seeing a 3 foot long mosquito larva projected on the overhead screen!!! This activity supports Grade Seven
