I Have a Dream Speech Analysis Discussion Guide

Created by
Teacher Goodies
This speech analysis discussion guide highlights the rhetorical devices used by King with margin annotations and correlating color coded lines underlined in the text. I use this key to show the students, "How did the author say it?" (a common core step when doing close and critical reading). Using this activity helps the students understand the speech better and helps them with evaluating what King was saying.

I found that students lacked a true understanding of the institutionalized racism and social/political/economic challenges African Americans faced in the 100 years between the end of slavery and the first breakthroughs of the Civil Rights Movement. To provide more context, I created this assignment explaining sharecropping, the KKK, Jim Crow Laws, Poll Taxes, Literacy Tests, and Grandfather Clauses. It is very informative and great for class discussion afterwards and linking to modern times.

This is a great deal of the materials that I use for my U.S. Government and U.S. Government Honors classes. This probably will not carry you for an entire school year, but it's close. Some of the things that I do in my class I do not have rights to (textbook worksheets, etc.) and I’m in no position to share. I also teach financi

Political Parties: Find out if your students are conservative or liberal!

Students can have very strong opinions on many of the topics that surround the news today (often their parents' opinions, but opinions all the same). But do they really know if they are truly conservative or liberal: democrat or republican? This activity explores all of their beliefs and thoughts on a number of world/national issues and begin to filter their political preferences to one side of the spectrum or the other. This IS NOT an exercise to pin students against students, but rather to

Nor does the public realize that outside groups are spending more on campaigning than local candidates and political parties! It questions the decision from the
