I make it double sided and we read one short story and fill it out together and then they read one with a partner or small group and fill it out on their own. To get kids engaged in the activity, I type up the main events or details in a simple story and cut them into strips. This can be used as a beat chart and as a beginning stage of students learning to write out rhythms that they hear. It's mini dictation for elementary school that's fun! Included on the last page are my suggestions for how I use the resource. I personally print the first page for students to use as a beat chart and then they draw the notes over the umbrellas. I project the rest on the white board. Alternatively if you laminate them it's like each student has their own little white board.
